Paris Saint-Germain won on penalties (1-1 on aggregate, then 1-4 on penalties) against Liverpool (Liverpool/PSG video highlights) this Tuesday at Anfield in the second leg of the Champions League 2024-2025 Round of 16. After the match, Paris defender and captain Marquinhos (30) spoke in the mixed zone. Happy, he nonetheless stressed that PSG still have a long way to go. He also stressed the importance of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma (26).

Marquinhos “You have to enjoy it, celebrate now, but it’s only the round of 16.”

A great moment for PSG?

We need to enjoy it and celebrate now, but it’s only the 8th final. We want to go very far, and to do that we have to keep going and give it our all. We have to take advantage of the opportunities we get and be decisive. It’s the details that make us grow.

Marquinhos “We mustn’t say ‘that’s it, I think we’ve done the job’, because it’s only the beginning.”

Can PSG think about the title?

We’re a long way from it. I think we’ve shown that we’ve got some great things ahead of us. But as I said, we need to keep our feet on the ground. Because we still have a lot of work to do. We can’t get carried away now, we can’t say that Paris is the favourite now. We mustn’t say “that’s it, I think we’ve done the job”, because it’s only the beginning.

I think we’ve done some good things, but we’ve got to keep working. I think that’s also what the coach is going to tell us during the week. There’s no time to relax, because on Sunday we’ve got a Classico to play and win.

Then there’s the national team, which we’ve just come back from, and then there’s the Cup, which we’ve got to get back behind. There’s no time to relax, that’s what we like. We want to play in all the competitions, we want to win titles. There’s a long way to go, and we really have to stay on our game.

Marquinhos “We know he was heavily criticized after the first game, but he showed his worth again.”

Donnarumma’s performance?

I told him before the penalty shootout, ‘this match is made for you’. We know he was heavily criticized after the first match, but he showed his worth again. He was important throughout the match. He was very aggressive, he came out, he was very active in all situations.

He showed what he’s capable of. We’re very happy for him, because he’s a great player. We really want him to be in top form. We’re happy when he’s decisive like that, it’s really good for us.
