Véronique Rabiot, the mother and agent of 29-year-old Olympique de Marseille midfielder Adrien Rabiot, has decided to lodge a complaint following the chants and banners at the Parc des Princes during Sunday night’s match between Paris Saint-Germain and OM (3-1 victory, day 26 of Ligue 1). The club has issued an official statement announcing that it is joining the complaint.
“Olympique de Marseille condemns in the strongest possible terms the banners unfurled and the abusive, racist and discriminatory chants descended from the stands at the Parc des Princes last night, during the match against Paris Saint-Germain.
The personal attacks aimed at Adrien Rabiot and his family are despicable and unacceptable. The club, which would like to offer its full support and solidarity to its midfielder and those close to him, has announced that it is joining the complaint filed against X by Adrien Rabiot’s family.
Once again, OM wishes to reiterate that it will continue to be intransigent and inflexible against any insulting remarks made against its Club, its directors, its employees or its supporters.”
It’s no surprise, then, that OM have a duty to support their player, and it would almost have been strange if they hadn’t joined in all the fuss since Sunday. It’s especially the latter that’s tiresome and annoying, whereas there’s a great silence when there are insults or other incidents in other stadiums. Where’s the outrage over the arson attacks in Montpelliers this weekend?
We’re not in favor of insults, but we’ll have to deal with them fairly and with continuity. Focusing on PSG for a few days because it’s interesting in the media won’t get us anywhere.
