On Matchday 31 of Ligue 1 2024-2025, Paris Saint-Germain take on Nice at the Parc des Princes this Friday at 8:45pm. It’s a match that opens the day with a thought for the Champions League, before a weekend that pits clubs in very different situations against each other.

PSG host Nice for their final warm-up game before Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal. The match promises to be intense and difficult, with the 5th-placed team undoubtedly keen to make a big impact in the race for Europe. Paris also have an unbeaten record in Ligue 1 to maintain, so watch out for Les Niçois.

Behind them, there’s still a fierce battle for Europe, with places still up for grabs last weekend. It’s Olympique de Marseille’s turn to defend 2nd place, with the Italian greening of the season a highlight. Perhaps taking advantage of Brest’s disappointment at having been knocked off Europe’s radar by last week’s defeat by Lens. But this is far from a guarantee.

Monaco (3rd) need to get back to winning ways after their 0-0 draw with Strasbourg. This will involve a trip to Le Have (16th) and the status of favourites, but also an obvious battle against a team fighting for survival. Strasbourg, in 7th place, have the same mission against Saint-Etienne (17th), who are level on points with Le Havre.

This clash of extremes continues against Lille (4th) at Angers (15th), in tense late-season matches that can always go either way. By contrast, Lyon (6th) and Lens (8th) have games against teams who don’t seem to have much left to play for: Rennes (10th) and Auxerre (11th). Even if their survival is not yet official.

Nantes, on the other hand, will have to do battle with Toulouse to secure their place in Ligue 1 next season. In this battle, Reims (13th) may well have the advantage over Montpellier (18th), who are already doomed (almost mathematically) and are on an 11-game losing streak.
