Paris Saint-Germain and the Seattle Sounders faced off this Monday at Lumen Field as part of Matchday 3 of the 2025 World Cup. The match ended in a 0-2 Parisian victory (video highlights Seattle Sounders/PSG). After the match, US team coach Brian Schmetzer spoke at a press conference.
Schmetzer “We only took 2 goals, not 4 or 5. Our tactics were very good.”
How did you feel about the match?
We got off to a good start. We knew we’d have to be ready for the best team in Europe. Our players tried, and that was good.
What did you learn in a match like that?
I was very pleased to see the intensity of the players. It’s all down to them, and that’s what we’ll be concentrating on going forward. It’s also a question of technical precision under pressure, which is what great players have. I think we’ve learned from other games, other teams. We learned from Botafogo. We only scored 2 goals, not 4 or 5. Our tactics were very good.
Schmetzer “I enjoyed meeting him. He remained very humble.”
What do you remember personally and for the club?
There was some concern that the fans wouldn’t be there, that there wouldn’t be a great atmosphere. But the fans were there. They pushed to the end. If the players never gave up, it’s because they were there. This connection is our club. I’m very proud of it.
What lessons can you take away from this match, with its great start and then its difficulties?
Luis Enrique’s humility. I enjoyed meeting him. He’s very humble. That helps the team win. I’ll keep that. Pushing the team to perform like this during the season is what we have to try to do.
