Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 26-year-old goalkeeper who joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 on a contract running until 2026 (following the end of his tenure at AC Milan), has been at the heart of rumours in recent weeks. There are doubts as to whether the Italian and his agent Enzo Raiola are willing to extend his contract. L’Equipe reports this Saturday that there are still doubts about the Parisian offer, while other clubs are interested. Including Chelsea, PSG’s opponents in Sunday’s Club World Cup final.
A problematic formula ?
“For months now, his entourage has been discussing an extension to his contract with the Parisians, which expires in June 2026. Paris has submitted a proposal based on the formula introduced by sports consultant Luis Campos in 2022: a fixed salary supplemented by a variable component (calculated in particular according to the number of matches played) which can represent up to a third of income. This is one of the cruxes of the problem, as “Gigio” is the last player to have a contract from the old era, which provides him with a salary of around €850,000 gross per month.
Over the last few months, the situation has alternated between hot and cold. PSG had opened the door to Lucas Chevalier. Campos liked the Lille man a lot, but Donnarumma’s arrival in 2025 has changed the landscape.
His outstanding performances in the Champions League have put him in a strong position, as has the interest of several European clubs, including… Chelsea. It was agreed between Paris and the Italian that a decision would be taken after the Club World Cup. As he has said publicly, his priority is to stay. But not under any conditions.»
There’s nothing impossible about it, as there’s no certainty about Donnarumma’s future until it’s signed. But we remain cautious in the face of rumours, and even a little weary. The goalkeeper and his agent have made it clear that they are enthusiastic and optimistic about signing for PSG.
And yet, here after a short break, the media continue to put the vagueness forward. Perhaps there will be a surprise, but we’re a long way from that today, and it seems a shame to look for difficulties.
Chelsea is linked to this dossier, which could also “score” just before the final. It could add a little spice. There is one credible point, however, and that is that the English club’s goalkeepers are struggling to convince at the highest level.
