Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national team, was asked at his press conference to comment on the very rapid adaptation of 20-year-old midfielder/forward Désiré Doué, from Paris Saint-Germain, to the national team environment.
Deschamps: “His mindset is ready for the highest level.”
“It’s not about age. I wouldn’t call it exceptional, no. He has his qualities, and his mindset is ready for the highest level. Everything started very quickly. He had to meet very high expectations very early on.”
Of course, talent is an essential asset for succeeding at the highest level, whether at club or national team level. However, we shouldn’t forget the importance of mental strength. Game intelligence, dedication, the ability to be self-critical, to cope with difficult situations, and to manage success—these are all crucial. Exceptional careers don’t happen by chance.
For the moment, Doué seems well on his way to having a successful career. In particular, because he knows how to listen and how to persevere through adversity. Like all players, he will experience difficult moments. But we’ve seen him bounce back. He will need to continue on this path, always avoiding complacency. Regardless of technical skills, everyone needs to work hard and analyze their weaknesses from time to time. Let’s hope Doué never forgets that.
