Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 1-0 defeat against Olympique de Marseille on Monday at the Stade Vélodrome, during matchday 4 of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season. After the match, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique spoke to the press.
Enrique: “We controlled the entire match”
“We made too many mistakes in the first half. Mistakes that prevented us from being in control of the game. But in the second half we were better. We controlled the entire match. We had opportunities to equalize, but we didn’t score that goal.”
Did the circumstances affect the players’ mentality, with less pressing and intensity in particular?
“No, I don’t agree. We pressed exceptionally well. Their goalkeeper only played long balls. What we can criticize are the simple mistakes we made. When you play this type of match, it’s very difficult. I’m not happy with the result, but I saw our DNA return, and I’m happy with that.”
Enrique: “We clearly know what it means to lose a match like this”
There were some scuffles, especially at the end of the match. Is that part of the atmosphere of these games?
“After my experience at the World Cup, I prefer to stay away from those things.”
For Marseille, this isn’t just any victory, is this defeat any different for you?
“Of course. We clearly know what it means to lose a match like this. We tried to play our best game. It was close. Marseille played with good intensity. But that’s what high-level football is like. It’s a shame for us, but we have to prepare for the next matches. Stay focused.”
Can Marseille be a title contender?
“We’ll see, I don’t know. I’m not a fortune teller, we’ll have to wait and see. We want to be champions, that’s our goal, but it will be difficult against Olympique Marseille, Monaco, and the other top teams. We’ll see what happens.”
