Pedro Fernandez Sarmiento, often called Dro Fernandez, is reportedly very close to joining Paris Saint-Germain this winter. The 18-year-old midfielder does not want to extend his contract, which expires in 2027, with FC Barcelona and has a €6 million release clause that PSG is expected to trigger. Sport now claims that Barça is attempting to negotiate a higher fee than the clause.
“As a gesture to avoid further straining relations between the clubs.”
“Barça has accepted his departure but hopes to reach an agreement with the Parisian club to avoid triggering the €6 million release clause. Barcelona hopes to receive a larger compensation package, in the region of €10 million, as a gesture to avoid further straining relations between the clubs and to allow the player to concretely demonstrate his gratitude to the club that contributed to his development.”
Dro will sign for PSG, primarily attracted by Luis Enrique. During one of his regular trips to Barcelona, the Asturian coach met with the young player and presented him with a sporting project, which the latter enthusiastically embraced.
The idea may seem far-fetched; why would PSG agree to pay more than the release clause? However, it’s not impossible. It could be motivated by the player’s wishes, indeed, to “help” his boyhood club, given that he’s leaving earlier than expected. For 4 million euros, it could be a gesture to ease tensions between the clubs.
Nevertheless, nothing is certain. The relationship between Paris and Barça is already complicated, so it’s not certain that the Parisian management will make this far-from-necessary effort. As for Dro Fernandez, there’s nothing concrete to suggest he’s pushing for negotiations. The fact that he’s been sidelined from training for several days doesn’t exactly inspire him to fight for such recognition.
We can’t rule out that the pro-Barça media outlet has, once again, started fueling a somewhat vague rumor to keep the story alive. Which is taking longer than many predicted (as usual). Moreover, it’s still not certain that the young midfielder will sign with PSG. So, we remain cautious, especially regarding the financial details.
