Lucas Chevalier, the 24-year-old goalkeeper who joined Paris Saint-Germain from Lille in the summer of 2025, is going through a difficult period. After several underwhelming performances, he saw Matvey Safonov (26) take advantage of a foot injury to showcase his talent and impress. He has even found himself on the bench for recent matches against Newcastle, Strasbourg, and Olympique de Marseille. Is there cause for concern about his future, particularly regarding the World Cup this summer with the French national team? RMC Sport discussed this situation.

“At the club, we maintain our confidence in him.”“Today’s reality is not the same as it was in May.”

“At the club, we maintain our confidence in him.”

“At the club, we maintain our confidence in him, convinced that he is a player who will contribute in the medium term. They signed him with a long-term project in mind. Luis Enrique has always reiterated that there is competition for the position.”

With significantly reduced playing time, should Lucas Chevalier be worried about his place in the national team? Within the French national team, they are closely monitoring the situation of the former Lille player. It will need to be compared to that of the other goalkeepers. Brice Samba’s situation, for example, is also being closely watched.

“Today’s reality is not the same as it was in May.”

Moreover, those close to the French national team reiterate that today’s reality is not the same as it was in May. However, if Lucas Chevalier continues to be content with this limited playing time, it’s possible he won’t be going to the World Cup next summer.

Nothing too surprising. You can never guarantee that a new signing will perform immediately, or even ever. That’s part of football. There’s no need to panic because of a difficult period. It happens to all players, and bouncing back is a real possibility. Warren Zaïre-Emery (a 19-year-old midfielder) is an excellent example.

Chevalier needs to learn from the competition and the high standards he faces in order to work even harder and get back to his best. The qualities he displayed at Lille haven’t suddenly disappeared. He’ll have to fight for a starting position at PSG and a place with the French national team. This is the very highest level.

The club invested in the future by bringing in this young goalkeeper and can certainly accept that he needs time. The challenge for Chevalier this season is the World Cup. Naturally, this adds pressure to the need to perform quickly. At least several of his competitors (like Alphonse Areola or Brice Samba) aren’t in a better position.
