This Wednesday, February 25th, as they host AS Monaco at the Parc des Princes (kick-off at 9 pm, CET) in the second leg of their 2025-2026 Champions League playoff (having won the first leg 3-2), Paris Saint-Germain has a small event to celebrate. It’s the birthday of goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, who turns 27 today.
Arriving in 2024, Safonov was a major surprise signing during the transfer window and for a long time had to play the role of backup to Gianluigi Donnarumma. But Lucas Chevalier replaced him with mixed performances, and an injury in the fall gave the Russian an opportunity. He seized it and has been the starting goalkeeper lately. We can only hope he continues in this vein, even though the competition will be fierce and expectations very high at PSG. In the meantime, we wish him a happy birthday. It should be celebrated tonight with a victory and qualification for the Round of 16.
