Pierre Sage, RC Lens coach, spoke to Ligue1+ after the 3-0 victory against FC Metz on Sunday in Matchday 25 of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season. When asked about the title race after closing the gap to just one point behind Paris Saint-Germain (who lost 1-3 to Monaco), the Lens manager remained noncommittal.
Sage: “We’re moving forward to potentially play an important match.”
“We’ve secured our place in the Conference League, a milestone we wanted to reach. Now, we’re aiming for the Europa League, then the Champions League. We’re moving forward to potentially play an important match against Paris Saint-Germain and, why not, keep dreaming. In any case, we’ve reached a milestone we’ve been striving for for the last two matches. Today, we combined performance and a result, so the slate is ticking.”
As has become clear over the past few weeks, Sage doesn’t want to talk about the title and is focused on securing a European spot. One way to avoid pressure, but also the major disappointments of a poor result. It’s also a bit tiring, really, to see Lens not fully embracing their place in the title race, sitting just one point behind the leader. There’s plenty to fight for. Perhaps it’s a matter of asserting themselves a bit more within the group, internally. In any case, PSG must keep in mind that they’ll have to fight to be champions. It’s high time they rediscovered their scoring touch.
