On Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain played their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool and won 2-0. Speaking to PSG TV, Parisian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov (27 years old) reflected on this victory.
Safonov: “I think we’ll be ready for this battle.”
“I’m very happy because Liverpool didn’t have many opportunities to score. As a goalkeeper, I’m very happy, but I know the second leg might not be the same. In the dressing room, our feeling is to go to Liverpool to beat them, and I think we’ll be ready for this battle.”
Safonov: “Our fans give us a lot of energy.”
“It’s true that today, the atmosphere was incredible. There’s something special about these Champions League matches. I looked at the stands before kick-off and it was magnificent.” Our fans give us so much energy to work harder, to give that energy during the match.”
A great victory for PSG, who secured the essentials in the first clash of this two-legged tie. At the Parc des Princes, it was crucial to win in order to gain the best possible advantage before the trip to Anfield. Even though PSG were the favorites and are currently leading 2-0, it would be a serious mistake to assume they’ve already qualified for the semi-finals. The hardest part is yet to come.
Luis Enrique and his men know this perfectly well. They will have to give 100% this Tuesday, April 14th, to secure their place in the next round. The capital club will have to play seriously from the first minute to the last to give no hope to the Reds, who will try to pull off an upset in front of their home crowd.
