Ferran Torres, the 26-year-old forward for FC Barcelona (under contract until 2027) and the Spanish national team, has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain during this transfer window. Mundo Deportivo has provided an update on a rather unique situation involving both Barça and the Spanish international.
“Barça maintains its intention to extend Ferran Torres’s contract. The Valencia native’s current deal runs until 2027, but the Catalan club wants to wait until September to offer him an extension. This decision is driven solely by Financial Fair Play rules. If Ferran were to extend his contract before the summer transfer window closes, Barça’s ability to sign new players would be restricted.
However, the variable fee of eight million euros that Barça would owe Manchester City in the event of an extension would not be an issue, as this condition was already factored into the club’s initial decision to make him an offer.
Ferran will remain in the United States for a few more days, until the end of the World Cup. Once that concludes, it will be time to make a decision. We shall see whether he waits until September to extend with Barça or decides to try his luck in Paris.”
These are not mere details for a club like Barça, which is walking a financial tightrope—even if it remains peculiar to discuss their struggles while the Catalan club continues to pull off major transfers, such as the arrival of Anthony Gordon this summer, estimated at around 80 million euros.
The fact remains that Barcelona must tread carefully; we have recently seen instances where their moves faced difficulties in gaining approval. Torres’s situation could thus present an opportunity for PSG. However, a note of caution: Paris’s interest has not been officially confirmed, let alone the claim that the Spanish forward is a priority target. The player’s own preference remains unknown as well. Therefore, it is best to remain cautious for the time being.
