Paris Saint-Germain and Lille faced off this Friday at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Matchday 2 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. Following the game, Lille coach Davide Ancelotti spoke at a press conference. He was very clear about his takeaways from the match and addressed the referee, who faced criticism from many for allowing more stoppage time than initially announced.

Ancelotti: “We’ll hold onto the most important things”

How do you walk away from a match like this? Are you disappointed with the score or satisfied with your team’s play? What do you think is the main takeaway?

Frustration first—though that frustration won’t last. It’s the emotion we all feel—the fans too, I imagine—that sense of frustration. But ultimately, I think we’ll hold onto the most important things: the players’ performance and the connection we shared with the crowd. Those are things we absolutely must keep. We also have to learn that when playing against teams like this, you have to be more than perfect to win.

And the qualities we showed—solidarity, commitment, hard work—must remain constant. We didn’t win today because we were up against a team full of confidence with extraordinary players—players who can find a pass or score a goal in the blink of an eye, just as they did in those two minutes. But it won’t always be like that. So, we have to learn from today’s match, too. (…) Against a team like that, the game is never over.

Ancelotti: “Now isn’t the time to talk about the officiating; that’s a minor detail.”

Was the stoppage time perhaps excessive? There were three minutes of stoppage time; after Paris Saint-Germain scored, an extra minute was added. I believe the corner kick happened before the 94th minute, though that is a matter of the referee’s interpretation. I don’t think now is the time to talk about the officiating; it’s a minor detail. Yes, he could have blown the whistle after Berke Özer touched the ball, but we aren’t here to discuss that. “It wasn’t a major refereeing error,” were the comments reported by Le Petit Lillois.

Inevitably, there is a whirlwind of emotions after a match like that. Even though PSG isn’t at 100%—like every team, though Paris was particularly affected by the World Cup’s impact on their preparation—going toe-to-toe with them like that is a real source of pride. There were very positive aspects to Lille’s performance, points to build on for the future. The key for LOSC will be to remember these ingredients—high intensity and team unity—when facing less prestigious opponents.

It is also a match that can serve as a foundation and a confidence booster for the Champions League campaign in September. This team could cause trouble for many opponents. Of course, that doesn’t completely erase the frustration. Victory was within reach; those are points dropped. It is understandable that some are grumbling about the slightly extended stoppage time—it’s a tough pill to swallow.

Yet, Ancelotti is likely right not to dwell on it. There was nothing shocking about it, and the players need to focus on the task at hand. The announced stoppage time is a minimum; match events add time—that’s football. It would be a shame to overlook all the positives because of that, especially against a unique opponent that knows how to fight to the very end and possesses exceptional quality. Vitinha (the 26-year-old midfielder) is a perfect example of this, with his splendid goal and the lightning-fast sequence of moves that led to his cross for Marquinhos.
