With the Olympique de Marseille vs. Paris Saint-Germain match just days away, one figure stands out: Le Parisien reported that 7,500 tickets were still available at the Vélodrome. For any other fixture, this news would be all but unremarkable. For Le Classique, however, it is more unsettling, as this match remains the symbolic pinnacle of French football—perhaps more so for what we expect of it than for what it has actually become.

A match that remains massive because we refuse to treat it as ordinary

It would be tempting to jump to a dramatic conclusion: that Le Classique no longer captures the imagination. That would be premature. If the fact that thousands of tickets remain unsold becomes national news, it is precisely because an Olympique de Marseille vs. Paris Saint-Germain clash is, by definition, expected to fill the Vélodrome.

Everything surrounding the match continues to reflect its special status. Authorities have once again classified it as “Level 5″—the highest risk rating—despite the fact that Paris fans are barred from attending. The LFP even chose this match to launch its special match-ball initiative, reserved for five major Ligue 1 fixtures. The ceremony remains. The symbolism, too.

And fortunately so. Le Classique does not lose decades of history simply because ticket sales slow down for a few days. The Vélodrome, Paris, Marseille, the accumulated memories, and everything this rivalry entails are still enough to mark this date as a highlight of the calendar.

The problem lies not in the past, but in what the present fails to generate

The erosion lies elsewhere. A genuine sporting rivalry cannot simply be decreed. It emerges when each side can truly prevent the other from achieving its goals—when the clash goes beyond mere pride on a single night to shape the outcome of an entire season. That is precisely what Le Classique no longer produces.

The paradox is all the more cruel given that, last season, Marseille briefly reminded us what this rivalry could become again. OM had beaten Paris 1–0 at the Vélodrome, ending a fourteen-year winless streak at home in Le Classique. Finally, a hiccup. Finally, something to fuel the next chapter of the story.

But Paris subsequently won the Trophée des Champions against Marseille before handing them a 5–0 thrashing at the Parc des Princes—the biggest margin of victory in the history of this fixture. In the span of a few months, the hope of a level playing field and the reality of the gulf between the two sides coexisted.

Perhaps that is where the unease lies. We continue to treat OM–PSG as the marquee clash because no other French fixture carries quite the same symbolic weight. Yet, year after year, we also wait for Marseille to find enough consistency so that the match becomes a showdown at the summit—not just of the calendar, but of the league standings, ambitions, and the balance of power.

Paris cannot manufacture its own rival.

Of course, there is another side to the argument. A rivalry does not require two perfectly matched champions. A white-hot Vélodrome, an unexpected Marseille victory, or a few heated encounters can be enough to instantly reignite the unique spirit of Le Classique. Last season served as a reminder of exactly that.

But this cannot indefinitely substitute for genuine, sustained sporting competition. Marketing departments can create a special match ball, broadcasters can hype up the big event, and authorities can deploy massive security operations. Yet none of these elements can create the one thing the fixture truly needs: the uncertainty born of two clubs vying for the same peak.

Those 7,500 unsold tickets do not necessarily signal the death of Le Classique. Instead, they remind us that the fixture is still sustained by a promise: the hope that Marseille will one day be strong enough that Paris travels to the Vélodrome not merely to face its historic rival, but its sporting rival too. Le Classique does not need to be reinvented. It has simply been waiting too long for OM to deliver what PSG cannot provide on its own: a true rivalry.
