That brief remark sparked debate and controversy. The French captain responded to L’Équipe this Monday.
Mbappé: “People always have to find a debate, and they certainly found one here.”
“I’ve already spoken to him about it. There’s no tension. He’s a friend. I don’t think there’s any issue there. I’m completely relaxed about it. That said, during the Nations League and the international break, people always have to find a debate, and they certainly found one here.”
For once, one has to concede a point to Mbappé: the media and certain fans seem to have a need to find a debate or a controversy, even if it means making a big deal out of almost nothing by stretching the “story” in every possible direction. However, the Real Madrid forward knows this well and cannot pretend he doesn’t play a part in this media game himself. His comments were bold, and he could have anticipated a reaction.
Dembélé chose to respond—albeit with a touch of subtlety. But the bait had already been cast, and it is hard to complain later when people pounce on it. We can only hope, however, that there is indeed nothing serious going on between the two players. It would be a rather unfortunate source of tension for a statement regarding an individual trophy, especially given the major team goals they must have with the French national team. Any potential tension has likely been blown out of proportion. Besides, there is no guarantee the matter is closed.
