Here is our ongoing series: 5 great reasons to tune in to a match. We’ll be highlighting the most compelling aspects before each game, blending serious analysis with a touch of humor. Please note, this isn’t intended to be an exhaustive preview. We continue here with the match featuring Paris Saint-Germain (1st) against Manchester City (8th) this Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium, on Matchday 2 of the 2026–2027 Champions League (kick-off at 9 PM; CET).
5 – The “new” Manchester City.
After 10 years as Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola stepped aside to take a well-deserved break. A new era begins with Enzo Maresca; notably one of Guardiola’s former assistants, Maresca could hardly be closer to his predecessor’s style—both in terms of gameplay and even physically. There are, however, differences that require adaptation. There has also been ambitious recruitment—perhaps the last for a while, given that the club has been cited for 114 financial infractions over recent years.
4 – Ayyoub Bouaddi: the long-awaited signing.
Ayyoub Bouaddi joined Manchester City this summer from Lille in a deal reported to be worth €95 million. Before that, the 19-year-old midfielder had attracted interest from several clubs, notably PSG. Many fans had hoped he would join to provide strong competition for Vitinha (26). This match offers a chance to see him again—albeit perhaps with a hint of regret. That is, if he plays; he faces stiff competition for a spot at City. If he does take the field, the Moroccan will naturally be a player to watch closely from the English side.
3 – A reunion with Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 27-year-old goalkeeper, left PSG in the summer of 2025 following a somewhat murky situation. Contract extensions had been discussed but ultimately stalled. The Italian has since taken over as the number one at Manchester City and will now face his former teammates. This sets the stage for some great moments before and after the match. The hope is that he won’t leave Paris with any regrets; Lucas Chevalier (24) failed to make his mark there after arriving from Lille as a potential replacement. Now, the onus is on Matvey Safonov (27) to rise to the occasion.
2 – Will Ferran Torres be effective in his first “Torressico”?
The 26-year-old forward faces a special week with PSG. Following his summer signing, he is set to face two of his former clubs: Manchester City (2020–2021) and FC Barcelona (2021–2026). Beyond the significance of these European fixtures, it is a prime opportunity for him to make a decisive impact and prove that he perhaps deserved more trust.
1 – A big Champions League night.
It is “only” the league phase—not quite as intense or thrilling as the knockout stages—yet points matter, and qualification is crucial for both clubs. Both are clear contenders for the ultimate title. We can look forward to a great match of football; that alone is reason enough to tune in.
