Achraf Hakimi, Paris Saint-Germain’s star full-back and pillar of the Moroccan national team, was recently named one of the five finalists for the prestigious title of African Player of the Year 2024. Although widely considered the favorite to win the award, he was ultimately edged out by Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian striker from Atalanta Bergamo. He was nevertheless included in the team of the year.
“Named one of the 5 finalists for the African Player of the Year award, Achraf Hakimi was selected in the team of the year. “
It’s certainly a disappointment, as the title was so close to his grasp. It’s a bitter defeat, although Lookman is to be congratulated on his trophy. Hakimi had much to look forward to, and he must be very disappointed. Considered one of the best players in the world in his position, he was able to realize just how difficult it is to exist against attacking players.
This is also true of the Ballon d’Or in general. That he should be part of the standard team is totally logical, and there’s no point in debating it as it’s so obvious. For the Best Player award, on the other hand, it’s more complicated to hear, as Hakimi proves with every match that he’s a different player.
