Marquinhos, Paris Saint-Germain’s 30-year-old defender and captain, spoke to Canal+ after Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat by Aston Villa (Aston Villa/PSG video highlights) at Villa Park in the second leg of the Champions League 2024-2025 quarter-finals (3-1 first leg, 4-5 aggregate). He spoke of a more complicated match than expected, the qualification and the performance of 26-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Marquinhos: “It’s top level, you have to make as few mistakes as possible”.
Is it good to be through to the semi-finals?
I’ve had some difficult moments and you have to savor them. Even when things got tough, we were able to stay strong, even at the end of the match. This team’s going from strength to strength. We wanted to play a complete game, we started well and then we had a few dips in intensity.
It’s up to us to make sure we don’t make the same mistakes again in the semi-finals, because that’s costly. The Champions League is all about details, it’s a high-level game, and you have to make as few mistakes as possible. We’re paying for it at the back, and this team is growing from strength to strength, showing values, but there’s always room for improvement.
Marquinhos “The little mistakes we have to improve on and keep growing like that.”
Will that make the team grow?
Yes, it certainly will, we often say that, but we have a coach who’s very demanding. He’s going to see the mistakes we’ve made right away, and improve them for the semi-finals. In the Champions League, we’ve seen that with Madrid away from home, us away from home, and Barcelona today too, it’s very difficult.
When you manage to get through the stages, you really have to savour it. We need to improve on our little mistakes and keep growing like that.
Marquinhos “we really need a great goalkeeper and he really always shows his worth.”
Thanks Gigio?
Great teams always have saves from a great keeper. He’s here, he’s showing it again, at Liverpool, again here, the other games too. He’s becoming more and more valuable in your goal and showing his potential.
We’re happy because to get to the semi-finals and then the final and be champions, you really need a great goalkeeper, and he’s always showing his worth.
