On Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain faced Aston Villa in the second leg of the Champions League 2024-2025 quarter-finals. The match at Villa Park ended in a 3-2 defeat (4-5 on aggregate for Paris). Following the match, UEFA named the player of the match.
Ousmane Dembélé (27-year-old striker) is an excellent player, and he managed a few fine things, including an assist. It’s no “shock” that he’s been awarded this honorary title, but it’s still a surprise given that it was far from his best night.
Gianluigi Donnarumma (26-year-old goalkeeper), who made a number of decisive saves but can’t do much on goal, was expected to win the award. But UEFA chose otherwise.
