On Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich on Matchday 5 of the Champions League at the Allianz Arena. Here are our top and bottom stories.
Tops –
Intensity/Pressing
PSG’s intentions were good. There was pressure, a tactic was put in place, Nuno Mendes was higher up. The idea was a good one, on the face of it, but the Parisians were apathetic up front and couldn’t get the game going. They did, however, put their heart and soul into the game.
A serious PSG with 10 men
We’d imagined PSG would be caught off guard with 10 men, but in the end they held out with solidarity. It’s not much to get your teeth into, but it’s the sad reality of the moment.
There’s a lot missing from last night’s game. There was a lack of quality in goal, from defensive corners and in front of the opposition’s goal. It’s too much at this level. The consolation prize was that Bayern couldn’t play in senator mode. Even less so in numerical superiority.
Ramos returns
PSG are short of a striker, and now their lone striker is finally back in the competition. It’s a pleasure, and could change things in future matches.
In any case, we’ve been waiting for him to play again, he’s had his minutes, now it’s up to him to prove that he’s up to the level of expectations placed in him.
Flops –
How to score goals?
Barcola is disappointing, and so is Dembélé. There, I’ve said it. We may have seen Barcola too high, too fast, but his general level isn’t exceptional, even when he scores in Ligue 1.
On Tuesday, with one less attacker, scoring became a more than complex mission. PSG won’t be able to do it with these two players as their sole spearheads.
Safonov
We don’t mind Donnarumma being criticized, he’s made mistakes. But to say that Safonov had a good game, because he stopped the ball on him, is perhaps a little hypocritical.
Donnarumma has had even more convincing performances than Safonov. But if, at the end, we explain that, apart from one mistake, it was good, we skew the analysis.
Safonov wasn’t great with the ball, he wasn’t great at the restart, he didn’t save his team from an intervention he could have made, so it’s a failed match. In any case, Donnarumma would have been struck by lightning in the same match.
Luis Enrique
If PSG can’t win, if PSG can’t score, if PSG can’t defend well from corners, if the players haven’t really progressed in recent weeks, it’s also the coach’s fault.
There have been mistakes in recruitment, there have been mistakes in communication, and so the coach needs to be seen clearly as the captain of the ship.
At the moment, he’s not making the difference this season. He’s trying, but maybe he needs to look at things a little differently.
