On Tuesday evening, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Chelsea 3-0 (8-2 aggregate, quarter-final to be played against Liverpool or Galatasaray) in the second leg of their 2025-2026 Champions League Round of 16 tie (PSG won the first leg 5-2) at Stamford Bridge. Here are the highs and lows of this victory.
Highs –
❤️ Efficiency that changes everything.
PSG didn’t particularly dominate in terms of shots, far from what we’ve seen in some matches. But, as in the first leg, they knew how to be very dangerous when the opportunity arose. Especially since the first two goals came early and from the first two shots. That changes everything, especially at the highest level. We’ve always emphasized that this is part of football, and Paris was far superior in this regard.
No suspensions for the first leg of the quarter-final.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes were at risk of suspension with yellow cards, but they were careful, and coach Luis Enrique also took advantage of the scoreline to substitute them relatively early. They avoid suspension for the first leg of the quarter-final (April 7 or 8) against Liverpool or Galatasaray (match Wednesday evening).
Mayulu back in form.
After a difficult period, Senny Mayulu (19-year-old midfielder) has rediscovered his form recently, and he confirmed it tonight with a successful appearance off the bench. He scored a magnificent goal, and also contributed some nice link-up play and a welcome defensive impact.
Lows –
😡Safonov not always reassuring (but some saves).
To be clear, the 27-year-old goalkeeper made some fine saves, and it’s not a question of saying he should be substituted. However, some aerial challenges and slightly inaccurate clearances were noticeable. This needs to be addressed so that he and the team can gain even more composure.
Dembélé and Doué were very discreet.
In a PSG side receiving a lot of praise, it’s a shame we didn’t see more of their two creative geniuses. Ousmane Dembélé started, but wasn’t very prominent. Désiré Doué came on as a substitute, which wasn’t easy with PSG already in management mode, but he didn’t make much of an impact.
