Despite losing the final of the Club World Cup to Chelsea (3-0), Paris Saint-Germain impressed the soccer world with their performances and their team spirit. Carles Rexach, Cruyff’s former right-hand man and Messi’s scout, expressed his admiration for Luis Enrique’s PSG in an interview with L’Equipe newspaper.
“Johan Cruyff would have loved PSG. In a series of 5 matches, PSG would always win. Today, everyone has to concede. Luis deserves what’s happening to him, he understands and lives soccer to the full.”
After a 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, we expected at least a dip in form during this Club World Cup. But PSG proved even more impressive, beating Atletico Madrid 4-0, Bayern Munich 2-0 when reduced to 9 men, and Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals. Results aside, PSG’s collective strength and technical precision are dazzling.
But for the club from the capital, there is still one match to go before they can make their mark on history. If the praise is pleasant, the aim of this squad is to win it all. We’ve seen that it’s far from easy, with a Club World Cup final to contend with. Paris will still have to work hard, that’s how it is in top-level sport.
