Following Russia’s example since its attack on Ukraine, some are pushing for Israel to be suspended from football competitions in light of its various actions in the Gaza Strip. The Times discussed such a decision by UEFA. But FIFA, through its president Gianni Infantino, has explained that it is not considering it, as reported by France Info.

Referring to “the ongoing situation in Gaza” at the opening of the closed-door meeting of the body’s council on Thursday, October 2, its president, Gianni Infantino, stated that “the power of football” was to “unite people in a divided world” by offering “a message of peace and unity,” according to a statement from the organization.

According to the Italian-Swiss leader, FIFA “cannot solve geopolitical problems, but it can and must promote football throughout the world by harnessing its unifying, educational, cultural, and humanitarian values.” »

This is a very specific and sensitive situation, so we will avoid entering into a major debate that takes us away from football. It’s worth noting that some are questioning this explanation, even though Russia has been excluded. Even if it’s a different case, there is definitely geopolitics involved.

In any case, for the time being, Israel and its clubs can continue to participate in football competitions. A change is not impossible, except that it seems distant today. It’s difficult to know if UEFA could launch this without FIFA’s support.
