Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the 30-year-old Danish midfielder who signed with Olympique de Marseille this summer, gave an interview published by Onze Mondial this Thursday. He took the opportunity to express his club’s ambition against Paris Saint-Germain, their arch-rival and the reigning champions they want to dethrone.
Hojbjerg: “We’ve already beaten them this season, but we want to beat them again.”
“Paris just won the Champions League and showed some great things. But we want to beat them, we want to finish ahead of them. We’ve already beaten them this season, but we want to beat them again. It’s not easy, but we’re doing everything we can to have the best Olympique de Marseille possible.”
“Will Marseille finish ahead of Paris this season?”
“I know what you’re trying to make me say (laughs). But I won’t tell you, I won’t tell you what you want.” When I tell you that we’re trying to create a very, very, very strong Olympique de Marseille, we hope to have some great experiences. But the important thing is that we’re working well, we’re on the right track, and we’re doing things correctly.
It’s a classic statement, we know some will scoff. However, it’s good to see opponents showing ambition. PSG needs competition to be pushed to perform at their best and truly savor the titles won.
Of course, Hojbjerg also emphasizes that OM still has work to do to achieve its objectives. It’s not about announcing that Marseille will be champions this season. But the objective is there, and the club is working towards it. That’s quite logical and positive. Let’s hope that Ligue 1 will become increasingly competitive, as we can already see a certain level of play this season.
