Ligue 1 - Day 16 review: PSG and Marseille take the lead

PSG had already won at Monaco before the winter break, as the match which ended 2-4 had been brought forward to make way for Sunday’s Champions Trophy. The Parisians came out on top, with Ousmane Dembélé scoring a last-gasp winner.

In the league, Marseille did a fine job of moving to within 7 points of PSG thanks to a 5-1 win over Le Havre, which also put them 3 points clear of AS Monaco.

Behind them, Lille were stunned at home by Nantes, who are still clinging on to the upper echelons of the table and still know how to surprise, while Lyon secured the essential against Montpellier, who remain stuck at the bottom.

After a spectacular match, Nice managed to avoid re-launching Jorge Sampaoli’s hard-charging Rennes, who are still looking for a formula (and recruits) to get them out of the second half of the table. This should confirm their place in the European race, while Lens missed out on this step by losing to Toulouse, which somewhat defines the “middle of the table”. Strasbourg’s success against Auxerre was a similar story.

In the race to stay up, Saint-Etienne and Angers pulled off major coups with wins over Reims and Brest.
