On Matchday 1 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain drew 2-2 with Rennes at Roazhon Park. It was a somewhat frustrating yet interesting match—one that inevitably leaves Paris shy of the top spot they are targeting for the end of the season.

PSG can feel a mix of relief and frustration. They dominated play against Rennes while also facing dangerous counter-attacks, but ultimately suffered from a stark disparity in efficiency. Nevertheless, there were positive takeaways regarding their performance and their ability to avoid defeat—factors that should never be overlooked.
Earlier in the round, Olympique de Marseille got off to the best possible start, dispelling the doubts that had lingered over the summer. While the red card shown to Strasbourg when the score was 1-0 certainly helped, it does not diminish the fact that coach Bruno Génésio enjoyed a successful opener. Meanwhile, Strasbourg will need to react quickly amidst their ongoing squad overhaul.
Lens demonstrated stability with an impressive home win, even if conceding two goals while playing with a man advantage (11 vs. 10) was a bit of a nuisance. Still, starting with a victory is always a positive.
Especially since the league’s other “big guns” all did the same: Olympique Lyonnais won at Toulouse (0-2), Lille at Angers (0-2), and Monaco at Le Havre (0-1). Lyon achieved this despite fielding a completely rotated squad in the midst of their Champions League qualifying tie against Fenerbahçe (following a 1-1 draw in the first leg).
As for the rest, the results were draws of varying satisfaction. Newly promoted Le Mans kicked off with a point, while Brest seems to confirm that their European campaign is already a distant memory. Paris FC, having spent heavily again this summer, had certainly hoped for better against another newly promoted side. For Nice and Lorient, it’s better than a bad start.
