For their final league match of the calendar year (as next weekend is dedicated to the Coupe de France), PSG aimed to reclaim first place. And they achieved their goal, albeit with a rare lack of composure, securing the victory. The essential thing is that they’ve achieved this, except that Lens also managed a win against an OGC Nice side that continues to struggle. This victory confirms their position at the top of the table and is a force to be reckoned with.
Behind them, Lille secured a victory in Auxerre after a completely crazy match (four red cards and dramatic comebacks) that was incredibly frustrating for Auxerre (17 shots to 7). Auxerre now sit 16th, just above the relegation zone. Lille earned crucial points for their European qualification hopes, while Olympique de Marseille and AS Monaco parted ways with a Marseille victory that was essential for OM. This win will likely plunge Monaco back into doubt, perhaps even a crisis.
Lyon capitalized on the situation with a 1-0 win against Le Havre, a small consolation in a difficult match, but a much-needed result nonetheless. Meanwhile, Rennes responded positively to their 5-0 defeat against PSG with a 3-1 victory against Brest, who had just won three matches. The visitors had more shots (14 to 10), but Rennes once again won the battle for efficiency since the beginning of November.
We can also note a fine victory for Toulouse, keeping them in contention for a potential European spot, while that dream fades for Paris FC, who fall back into the relegation battle after a good start to the season.
Speaking of the bottom of the table, Angers continues to pull away, securing a convincing win against Nantes, who seem a bit lost after replacing coach Luis Castro with Ahmed Kantari. There’s no indication that the end of their crisis is in sight. Lorient, meanwhile, earned an important point against Strasbourg, who confirm their slide down the table.
