Returning to action after the international break is never easy, especially with the Champions League just a few days later. But PSG fulfilled their mission well before the first leg of their quarter-final against Liverpool on Wednesday. While managing the game effectively, Paris displayed great energy and some good spells of play against a Toulouse side known for causing problems.

This allowed them to secure three valuable points, giving them a cushion over Lens despite having a game in hand. The second-placed team stumbled against a ruthless Lille in the Northern derby. The 3-0 defeat was decisive; RCL were completely outplayed.

Monaco made a strong statement with their 2-1 victory against Olympique de Marseille, despite Marseille’s slight dominance. But we all know that efficiency counts at the highest level. And the points gained are precious in the race for European qualification, especially as OM’s position becomes increasingly precarious.

Rennes took full advantage after a thrilling and spectacular Breton derby, displaying impressive mental fortitude and attacking prowess despite a less-than-solid defense. This gives them a chance to continue their pursuit of a successful European campaign next season.

Beyond them, Strasbourg secured a comfortable return to action before facing Mainz (first leg of the Europa League Conference quarter-final). This was achieved despite the absence of Joaquin Panichelli, with a confident 3-1 win against a Nice side whose Ligue 1 status is still uncertain.

These two teams also closed the gap on Olympique Lyonnais, who left Angers frustrated after dominating possession but failing to score against the 12th-placed side. Which team doesn’t have to worry too much about staying up, especially since everyone else only managed one point: a draw for Paris FC in Lorient (a decent result for the Parisians, less so for the Bretons), but also draws between Le Havre and Auxerre, and Metz and Nantes. This doesn’t please any of the four teams. But the worst has also been avoided.
