PSG controlled the game against Lyon—though the visitors did carve out a few promising chances—and were ultimately rewarded with two late goals. It was a welcome outcome, especially after a long stretch where the Parisians had struggled with their finishing. These 3 points are a major boost, leaving the Parisians alone at the summit while other clubs faltered.
Indeed, the three other clubs that also sat on 14 points heading into the weekend either struggled or failed to break the deadlock. Monaco and Lille, for instance, played out a draw that left both sides frustrated. Lille were leading when they were reduced to ten men in the 66th minute—a moment they will surely look back on with regret—while Monaco might well have hoped for more than just an equalizer.
As for Paris FC, their trip to face Lens—a side currently surging up the league table, even while rotating their squad for European commitments—was always going to be a difficult test. There was a glimmer of hope when they opened the scoring, but the Parisians couldn’t sustain their performance over the full 90 minutes. Is this a sign of things to come for the rest of the season? It is too early to say.
Meanwhile, it certainly feels like we are witnessing a resurgence from Nice. Their 1-2 victory away at Brest suggests that the threat of relegation—a prospect they know all too well from last season—is beginning to fade. A far from straightforward result. Strasbourg also faced a difficult task against Rennes in their bid to get back on track—though the resounding nature of their defeat (3-0) could prove particularly damaging.
OM managed to regain some confidence, securing the win they needed. Yet, there is little cause for euphoria; the victory came against the bottom side in Ligue 1, and the team ended up sweating toward the finish despite having held a four-goal lead. That late-game fragility is likely to linger in people’s minds.
As for the survival race—to look on the bright side—Troyes and Angers each picked up a useful point against Toulouse and Lorient, respectively. The latter two, however, may regret failing to build on the strong form they had recently shown. These dropped points reinforce the sense that European qualification will remain out of reach—though, admittedly, that was always a tall order.
Finally, Auxerre and Le Mans—both firmly entrenched in the battle to avoid relegation—played out a 1-1 draw that leaves no one satisfied.
