This Friday, as part of Matchday 2 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain (8th) will face Lille (3rd) at the Stade Pierre Mauroy (kick-off at 8:45 PM, CET). The match official has been selected: Eric Wattelier (38). He brings significant Ligue 1 experience to the match, having officiated 175 games to date.

The referee will be assisted by Nicolas Danos and Cyril Mugnier. Guillaume Paradis will serve as the fourth official, while Alexandre Castro and Bruno Coué will handle video assistance.

Yellow cards –

With Mr. Wattelier officiating, one might expect relatively few yellow cards to be issued during the match. While the national average per game is 3.53 (standard deviation of 0.39), Friday’s referee has averaged 3.00 yellow cards per match over his Ligue 1 career (according to Transfermarkt figures). Such a low figure is rare; hopefully, this will not come at the expense of player safety.

Straight red cards –

The referee for this Friday is stricter when it comes to straight red cards. Wattelier has averaged 0.16 sendings-off per match in his career, compared to a national average of 0.17 (standard deviation of 0.07). This figure is closer to the average, suggesting that sanctions will be applied when necessary.

Second yellow cards –

Eric Wattelier does not typically send off a player following a first yellow card in Ligue 1 matches. While the national average stands at 0.09 (standard deviation of 0.03), his average is 0.05. Given the very low number of yellow cards initially but the lack of hesitation regarding red cards, this makes perfect sense.

Penalties –

Finally, regarding penalties, the referee officiating on Friday has a higher-than-average rate of 0.40 penalties awarded per match, compared to the Ligue 1 average of 0.34 (with a standard deviation of 0.08).
