Paris Saint-Germain secured a 4-2 victory over Manchester City this Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium, as part of the second matchday of the 2026-2027 Champions League league phase. Following the win, PSG manager Luis Enrique spoke at a press conference.
Luis Enrique: “There are still things we need to improve.”
How do you feel after this match?
“It was a very exciting, very intense game. When you have a match like this—with two teams that love to play football—it’s the kind of game you really enjoy. It was a top-level encounter with very few lulls. I believe we deserved to be in the lead during the first half. There are still things we need to improve.”
Luis Enrique: “You have to expect this kind of match when facing one of the best teams in the Premier League.”
How do you explain the difference between the two halves?
“It’s simple: one team was trailing 3-0 and took many more risks in the second half. They played with much greater intensity and pushed forward into our half more often. It was difficult to adapt to that. Our pressing was perfect in the first half.
We tried to replicate that in the second half, but it was tough. You have to expect this kind of match when facing one of the best teams in the Premier League. They have great players—they’re a great side—so it’s sometimes difficult to handle the opponent’s spells of dominance.”
Luis Enrique: “We need to be the best team come March, not right now.”
Did you send a message to the rest of Europe today?
“What message? The only real message is when you win the Champions League.” “But there is so much time between two seasons, and the level is so high, that it’s very difficult to be the best team of the season. We need to be the best team starting in March—not right now.”
Your record against English clubs keeps improving; do you think you have a psychological edge now?
“I hope so, I hope so. We’re simply trying to give our best. I hope we continue to play against English teams. We’ll be facing an English side again next month.”
