Gianluigi Donnarumma, the 25-year-old goalkeeper who arrived at Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 with a contract running until 2026 (following the end of his own at AC Milan), is regularly called into question by fans and observers alike. Even so, an extension is under discussion, but it’s proving rather difficult. His agent had even mentioned a “stand-by” situation. He spoke to L’Equipe again, and his comments were very clear.
“discussions are positive”.
“We’ve been talking to the directors since last summer about a new contract. It’s not an easy situation, because there are parameters that PSG has changed a little because of financial fair play. There are new rules at the club. But I have to say that discussions are positive, even if we don’t yet have an agreement. We’re talking, Gianluigi has a year and a half left on his contract, so we’ve got time. We’re looking for a solution.
“These rumours will die down on their own.
Still, there’s a lot of talk about PSG’s desire to recruit a new goalkeeper…
On this point, the directors have been clear: once we’ve signed, all these rumours will die down on their own.
Can you confirm Donnarumma’s desire to stay?
Of course I can! There’s no break with the club. We’re taking the time we need. We have to do things right in the player’s interest. But this is the only club where Gianluigi wants to sign. We’ll see how it all pans out, but the priority is to extend his stay in Paris.”
The idea is clear: to continue at PSG. But not by accepting just any offer. So discussions are underway, quite logically, with both parties defending their positions. With a common will, an agreement seems possible. There’s no need to rush into anything just yet, even if PSG certainly don’t want to drag their feet.
There will still be rumours between now and an agreement or a departure, so we’ll have to remain very cautious. Today, the most likely outcome is a contract extension. But you have to be careful in soccer, because sometimes there are big surprises. Let’s hope the matter doesn’t take too long, as rumors can be tiresome. And it’s always better to have clarity, especially for such a player.
