Lucas Hernandez, 29-year-old Paris Saint-Germain defender, spoke to Ligue 1+ after the 0-1 victory against Nantes this Sunday at the Stade de la Beaujoire as part of Matchday 1 of Ligue 1 2025-2026.
Hernandez: “It’s only the beginning.”
Are you relieved after this first victory?
It’s true that it’s not easy. We’ve had a very long summer with this Club World Cup. We’ve come back well, but we’re a little lacking in form to get into the rhythm we’re used to. It’s only the beginning, and it’s important to win, and now we have a long week to continue preparing.
You have a low scoreline in front of you, and it’s never easy?
It’s never easy when you play against teams like that, who play deep and attack very quickly on the counterattack. The most important thing is this victory, and we come away with the three points. We’ll have a long week to prepare well and try to be in better shape physically.
Hernandez: “I’m trying to perform as well as possible and try to repay the confidence the coach has given me.”
What are your personal goals this year?
The goals are clear this year: it’s a World Cup year, so I’m trying to perform as well as possible and try to repay the confidence the coach has given me.
I have to try to give it back on the pitch as best I can. It’s definitely going to be a long, big season, with a World Cup at the end, which is very important for me and all the players.
Hernandez: “It definitely means reaching Ligue 1.”
Are you feeling confident despite the competition?
Yes, we have a great team, we showed it last year, and this year we continue to strive to keep improving and bring titles back to Paris.
It’s clear that this starts with Ligue 1. We have to perform well in every match, and all the teams will be waiting for us. It’s up to us to make the matches easy and win every match possible.
