Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille faced off this Sunday at the Stade Vélodrome in Matchday 5 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season. The match ended in a 1-2 victory for Paris. After the game, Marseille coach Bruno Genesio spoke to Ligue1+.
Genesio: “We aren’t learning from our mistakes fast enough.”
You went toe-to-toe with the two-time European champions, yet once again, you’re walking away with zero points tonight?
Yes, we suffered from the same issues as last week; we conceded a goal from a set-piece where we were caught napping. I think we played a good first half, but we couldn’t replicate that level of performance in the second, as we were under much more pressure after the break.
We did manage to get back on level terms—which was no small feat—but then we lost our focus a bit; emotions were still running high, and it’s a shame to concede a goal like that. Conceding a goal to PSG when they use intricate passing or catch you off balance is one thing, but conceding from a second ball—being that inattentive—leaves you with a lot of frustration and regret. We aren’t learning from our mistakes fast enough.
Genesio: “You can’t concede a goal like that.”
Do you see any signs of improvement?
In terms of spirit and commitment, I have no complaints about the start of the season. I can’t fault my players in that regard in any of our matches. We need to do better—concede fewer goals and stay more alert. You can’t concede a goal like that right after equalizing if you want to pick up points at the highest level.
Genesio: “Over the 90 minutes, we deserved that point.”
What’s the takeaway? We had three weeks of good preparation, yet I feel like that little something extra was still missing.
We wanted plenty of movement to defend effectively against that two-man attack. That’s why we chose Neal Maupay. We figured that if we defended well, we could play the ball out and capitalize on his movement up front.
He worked hard for the team and made himself available. It’s frustrating to find ourselves almost satisfied with a defeat; in football, you need to win and pick up points. Still, over the course of the 90 minutes, we deserved that point.
