Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille faced off this Sunday at the Stade Vélodrome in Matchday 5 of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season. The match ended in a 1-2 victory for Paris. After the game, Marseille coach Bruno Genesio spoke at the press conference.

Genesio: “Being satisfied with a 2-1 defeat? No.”

Beyond the loss, do you take positives from the performance?

Yes, but I’m getting a bit tired of repeating the same things. Being satisfied with a 2-1 defeat? No. We can’t be. Especially when we keep making the same mistakes. If we concede a goal against the best team in Europe from a clever overlap, a three-man passing move, or a shot into the top corner, you applaud. But conceding a goal on the very next play after scoring ourselves, simply because we lost focus… That shows a lack of maturity.

I can’t fault our mentality or how we played against Europe’s best, but it’s not right to concede in that manner. We have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. We can’t be satisfied with a defeat; that’s not how you move forward. We should have used the lessons from previous matches to secure a draw—or perhaps even better.

Genesio: “I can’t be satisfied with a loss, even against the best team in Europe.”

Do you have any regrets? Did you believe you could do it?

Yes, I believed we could. We played the match we wanted to play in terms of defensive organization and effort. It’s a shame to concede a goal like that. They had other chances they could have converted, but you simply cannot concede a goal like that. I cannot be satisfied with a loss, even against the best team in Europe. That is not why I do this job.

How do you explain the lack of maturity? Is it a physical or mental issue?

It’s hard to say tonight. In any case, it keeps happening. That is the reality. We had spent 35 minutes this morning working on defending set-pieces.

Genesio: “You can’t throw it all away just because you aren’t alert on a second ball.”

Weariness? Is there a feeling of giving up? Will you still be the OM coach in the coming weeks?

It’s not about giving up. It’s just that, as a coach, you aren’t there to be congratulated for losing a match. You are there to win matches. I can’t be satisfied with the positives—especially since the loss came down to the same old mistakes. This group gave their all, and then some. They stood toe-to-toe with the best team in Europe. But I can’t be satisfied with losing. That’s how I feel right now. It’s the same issues cropping up again and again.

I have no complaints about my players, other than a lack of concentration or maturity. They were disciplined; they stuck to the game plan for defending well and playing the ball out effectively to take PSG out of their comfort zone. But you can’t throw it all away just because you aren’t alert on a second ball during a set-piece.

Will you be reflecting on your situation?

We discuss things with the board every day; we’re going to have some rest, which will be good. We’ll also be working, which will be good too. I have nothing else to tell you.

Genesio: “At Marseille, you can’t be satisfied with an honorable defeat.”

How do you explain the physical drop-off in the second half? When can that problem be fixed?

I think we showed improvement in this match, even though they had their chances. We were up against Paris, after all, and had little possession. You have to run a lot and put in a huge effort. It’s normal to flag a bit, though actually, it wasn’t that bad. We created a few interesting situations. I’m actually quite reassured on that front. Genesio: “Against teams like these, you have to be clinical in both penalty areas.”

Does the sense of pride following “respectable” defeats worry you?

When we lose a match, the players are frustrated and disappointed. At Marseille, you can’t be satisfied with a respectable defeat—especially when it’s four in a row in the league. I acknowledge that the schedule hasn’t been kind to us.

We played Paris right after the Beşiktaş match, whereas PSG hadn’t played in Europe. But picking up points against top teams builds confidence. We didn’t do enough to deserve better. (…) Against teams like these, you have to be clinical in both penalty areas.

Genesio: “We need to keep in mind that we’re on a mission.”

What is your take on sitting in 17th place?

It’s not the position we envisioned, even though certain circumstances suggested a difficult start to the season might be on the cards. But not to this extent. There are positives, and there are things that need fixing. We have to get used to the fight. It’s not the same as being at the top of the table. At Marseille, we’re used to the top of the table, not fighting for survival. That’s why I’m sounding the alarm about these “respectable” defeats. The upcoming matches won’t be easy. We need to keep in mind that we’re on a mission.

Is resignation a possibility?

No, that’s not on the agenda. I’ll take stock of the situation with the board, the coaching staff, and the players. What matters to me is helping the team improve.
