On Monday evening, Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 1-0 defeat against Olympique de Marseille in the 5th matchday of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 season at the Stade Vélodrome. Here are the highlights and lowlights of this match.
Highs –
None.
PSG didn’t play particularly well, the match wasn’t particularly entertaining, and then there’s the controversy surrounding the evening, which coincided with the Ballon d’Or award ceremony. It was truly a disappointing evening.
Lows –
Lots of intensity, little actual football.
OM deserved credit for fighting hard, and PSG should have been better, but overall, this “Classique” was characterized by too many hard-fought, even overly physical, duels, with very few truly noteworthy moments of play. The referee also allowed the tension to escalate unnecessarily.
Lucas Chevalier.
It was his first “Classique” and he made a crucial mistake on the goal conceded. That’s bound to hurt, especially since PSG lacked attacking ideas after that. With the pressure already on him following Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure, this wasn’t the kind of performance that will help him.
Lack of precision.
While we can criticize the goalkeeper for his poor positioning, it’s important to remember that few players were up to the task. There were numerous lapses in concentration, for example. And some players were slow to react in key moments, such as Kvaratskhelia being caught out of position when the ball was played into the box for the opening goal.
