On Matchday 4 of the Champions League group stage, Paris Saint-Germain hosted Atlético Madrid at the Parc des Princes (1-2 PSG/Atlético de Madrid video summary). After the defeat, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique spoke to PSG TV about his players’ performance and the tough result.
Luis Enrique “There are four Champions League matches left.”
“At the moment, it’s difficult to analyze a match like this. But it’s been the same story for the last few Champions League matches, success hasn’t been with us. Today, we’re obviously upset.
Tomorrow it’s time to look back at the game calmly and try to keep improving. We’ll pick ourselves up and try again. There are four Champions League matches left.”
Luis Enrique “We already knew that the draw had been very capricious”
“It’s a very sad feeling, because the fans supported us throughout the match. We insisted right up to the last second, but this feels like a horror film. It seems very unfair, and it is, indeed, very unfair.
I’ve never experienced so many unfair matches in a row in a competition in my career. We still have four matches to play. Four tough matches against top-class opponents. We already knew that the draw had been very capricious, and now we have to prepare ourselves to play these four matches.”
Frustration is the word that best represents PSG’s European campaign. This Wednesday, that word takes on even greater meaning after the defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Once again, PSG dominated, shooting and smothering their opponents, but were unable to gain the upper hand numerically. The final blow came at the end of the match, just as PSG were about to score the winning goal, they were hit by a killer counter-attack.
Once again, we’re going to have to bounce back from this painful home defeat. Numerically, the capital club can still qualify. But it’s hard to see how they can break out of this vicious circle. Bayern Munich and Manchester City are two of the four teams the club will have to face if they are to qualify.
The next stage promises to be a very difficult one, but we must have faith in this team, which has been playing almost perfect matches. The intensity is there, and so is the domination, but now we need to find the key to enabling PSG to capitalize on their chances and win the games they need to win.
