This summer, from June 15 to July 13, the first Club World Cup will be played. This new competition brings with it a number of changes, for example to the mercato. But also in the calendar for the 2025-2026 season. L’Equipe reports that Paris Saint-Germain’s match on Matchday 1 of Ligue 1 could be postponed.
“If PSG go far in this new competition (the semi-finals are scheduled for July 8 and 9, and the final for July 13), they could see their opening match postponed. As its players are legally obliged to take a 3-week vacation, this would mean resuming training for the new season around seven days before Ligue 1 Matchday 1, scheduled for the weekend of August 16-17.
This issue has already been raised by the League’s Board of Directors when the calendar for next season was adopted.”
It makes sense for PSG to start Ligue 1 a little later, with a week to spare in the event of a postponement. We need to adapt to this new competition and avoid putting our players at risk. Health remains a priority, and a too-rapid start would represent a risk, in addition to the minor sporting injustice of being penalized for having played in this Club World Cup.
The opponent scheduled for Matchday 1 would also be affected, that’s just the way it is. These are consequences to be anticipated as the competition gets underway.
