Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais faced off this Sunday at the Parc des Princes as part of Matchday 15 of Ligue 1 2024-2025. The match ended in a 3-1 Parisian victory (video summary PSG/Lyon). After the match, Lyon coach Pierre Sage spoke at a press conference, and made no secret of his disappointment at the first 2 goals conceded.
Sage “Against a team of this quality, you can make mistakes and you pay for them.
“What aspects of the match were you less good at?
We weren’t as good at applying the collective principles that should have driven us in the first quarter. We had made a number of choices about the way we defended, which we didn’t apply. It all came down to individual decisions. Inevitably, our partners found it hard to coordinate with that sort of thing.
It’s a shame, because we’re a team used to doing things together, offensively and defensively. When we put pressure on their three-man defence, we scored the goal to pull level at 2-1. Faced with a team of that quality, you can make mistakes and you pay for them”, comments relayed by L’Equipe.”
It’s easy to understand the anger of a coach who sees his team crack so quickly simply because some players are not following the collective plan. And that’s no excuse against such a tough opponent. It’s enough to sabotage you, when the margin is so slim at this level.
Sage was even more specific internally about those responsible. The regrets are all the greater given Lyon’s ability to trouble Paris afterwards. Even if there may have been some mismanagement on PSG’s side.
