This Sunday evening, Paris Saint-Germain won 1-0 (PSG/Monaco highlights) against Monaco in the Trophée des Champions 2024 at Stadium 974. We take a look at some of the highlights and lowlights of the win.
Tops –
Dembélé
Asked to be more decisive, he has been this season. Although he came close to turning in yet another frustrating performance, he scored the goal that clinched the title. That’s no mean feat. This season, he’s taking on more responsibility, perhaps less flamboyantly, but he’s scoring important goals. He’s there, in the right place, at the right time, and he’s made a real contribution to this title.
Paris invincible in France
This PSG never loses again, even against the big teams in France. The Parisian club has brought everyone up to speed, and it’s great to see that this team is finally exuding a great deal of serenity. There were no hitches, despite a difficult match after a long 10-day break.
A shared joy that feels good
This PSG team is used to winning, but the renewal of the squad is a welcome change. Doué, Pacho and Neves are all delighted with their first trophy, and those who have been with us for a short time continue to fill their cupboards. It’s a good match, with old hands like Marquinhos winning yet another title. We could see the joy in everyone’s eyes, the communion with the fans, and that felt good. It’s not over yet, there’s still more to come.
Flops –
Inefficiency
If there’s one PSG problem, it’s inefficiency. How many chances does this team need to score? This can become problematic. This team can’t win by heart alone, let alone by sheer luck. Yet we can’t see the problem really being solved. Dembélé and Barcola aren’t effective enough, and there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Doué and Lee are good players, but they won’t be scoring many goals. Ramos is confined to the bench and a supersub role. If the end of the season is exciting, there are also doubts to be resolved.
Still too little vertical play
If PSG likes to keep the ball, it has once again scored with a fast attack, a deep run and a number 9 who attracts defenders and creates weight in the opposing defense. The problem? It happened all too rarely. The players like to come back, turn the ball around, without really taking any risks. What’s more, Luis Enrique doesn’t seem to want to play with Ramos. For the time being, it works at the end of the match, with the changes, but why wait until so late to take risks and play deep?
