On Tuesday, October 20, during the third matchday of the 2026-2027 Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain will face FC Barcelona at the Parc des Princes (kick-off at 9:00 PM, CET). The referee for the match has been named: Michael Oliver (37). He brings significant Champions League experience, having officiated 48 matches in the competition.

The referee will be assisted by Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, with Robert Jones serving as the fourth official. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties will be handled by Marco Di Bello and Daniele Chiffi.

Yellow cards –

With Michael Oliver in charge, one might expect yellow cards to be issued quite freely. While the average in French matches is 3.53 per game (with a standard deviation of 0.39), this referee has averaged 4.42 yellow cards per match throughout his Champions League career (according to Transfermarkt data). This is a high figure, which should help protect the players—and the game itself—provided that communication remains a priority.

Straight red cards –

The referee for Tuesday’s match is far less severe when it comes to straight red cards. Oliver has averaged 0.04 straight red cards per match over his career, compared to an average of 0.17 in French matches (with a standard deviation of 0.07). Clearly, he is not one to hand out such sanctions indiscriminately.

Second yellow cards –

Michael Oliver is relatively inclined to send a player off following an initial yellow card; he has issued a second caution to the same player in a Champions League match an average of 0.10 times per game. The French average is 0.09 (with a standard deviation of 0.03). Given the high number of yellow cards and few red cards, this is almost surprising.

Penalties –

As for penalties, the official in charge of this match has a lower-than-average rate for France, awarding 0.25 penalties per game, compared to the Ligue 1 average of 0.34 (with a standard deviation of 0.08).

History –

Oliver has officiated 6 matches involving PSG: a 1-1 draw against Benfica (2022-2023 group stage), a 0-1 loss to Bayern Munich (2022-2023 Round of 16), a 2-1 win against Real Sociedad (2023-2024 Round of 16), a 3-0 win against RB Salzburg (2024-2025 league phase), a 7-0 win against Brest (2024-2025 play-off round), and a 2-1 win against Barça (2025-2026 league phase).

He has also officiated 5 matches involving Barça: a 0-0 draw (2019-2020 group stage), a 2-1 win against Dynamo Kyiv (2020-2021 group stage), a 0-3 loss to Bayern Munich (2021-2022 group stage), a 2-2 draw against Atalanta (2024-2025 league phase), and the aforementioned loss to PSG.
