In the opening match of Ligue 1 Matchday 3, Paris Saint-Germain hosted AS Monaco at the Parc des Princes and suffered a 1-2 defeat. Speaking to PSG TV, Joao Neves, the capital club’s 21-year-old midfielder, discussed the loss.
Neves: “I’m still proud of what we did on the pitch.”
“It was a very difficult match. Today marked my 100th game for Paris Saint-Germain, but unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get the win. And as I always say, the team is more important than the individual, so I can’t be happy today. I’m still proud of what we did on the pitch, but Monaco is a very good team with a lot of quality. We tried to play our game—and we did—but we couldn’t manage to score any more goals.”
Neves: “We didn’t manage to secure the win for them.”
“Since I arrived at the club, I can’t recall a single match where our supporters didn’t show up. They are incredible; they are the best supporters I’ve ever known. It’s sad because they were there to back us, and we didn’t manage to secure the victory for them.”
It was a tough defeat for PSG, despite the fact that they dominated both the match and their opponent. With just two shots on target, AS Monaco managed to dash Parisian hopes. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the Rouge et Bleu‘s night. In a match like this, even five or six extra shots on target wouldn’t have changed the outcome. We have to accept the result and keep working to improve.
We are only at the start of the season, so it is natural for PSG to face some difficulties at this stage. As the weeks go by, every element will gain momentum, enabling the team to take a significant step forward. In the meantime, the next challenge is already a European one (Wednesday against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League), and the team will need to be more clinical to put themselves in a better position.
