Paris Saint-Germain faced Olympique de Marseille this Thursday in the Trophée des Champions (2–2, 4–1 on penalties). After the match, Luis Enrique, head coach of the club from the capital, spoke to PSG TV about his players’ performance.
Luis Enrique: “We keep fighting until the very last minute”
“When you reach a final, the emotions are very intense and I think the team didn’t play as well as usual. It was difficult, our opponent played very well, but the mindset of this team is different.
We keep fighting until the very last minute and I think, in the end, penalties are a bit of our lucky charm! We’re very happy, the team is very happy, and it’s important for our supporters. It was a tough battle.”
Luis Enrique: “I have to congratulate my players, especially Gonçalo Ramos”
“It’s important to understand how difficult it is to win. Today was a test. I know it’s hard to always play at a high level. We’ve won many matches in the last minutes, and that shows you have a different character and mentality.
I have to congratulate my players, and especially Gonçalo Ramos because he is a soldier. He’s always ready — to play one minute, two minutes… he’s ready. He’s a soldier and we’re very happy to have Gonçalo with us.”
PSG largely controlled the match from start to finish, yet it could have slipped away after two mistakes that allowed Olympique de Marseille to get back into the game and even take the lead. Once again, Parisian super-sub Gonçalo Ramos made the difference.
In the very last minutes, the 24-year-old Portuguese striker kept PSG alive by scoring and sending the match to a penalty shootout. This Paris team thrives on emotion, loves suspense, and seems to enjoy putting its survival on the line in the dying moments of matches. Once again, during the shootout, the Parisian goalkeeper rose to the occasion.
After Matvey Safonov in the Intercontinental Cup against Flamengo, it was Lucas Chevalier this time who saved the first two Marseille penalties, allowing his team to secure their first title of 2026. A perfect start to the year for PSG, who continue their dominance and once again deny Marseille any hope of lifting a trophy after 14 years without silverware.
