In their opening Champions League group stage match, Paris Saint-Germain hosted Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes and secured a 6-1 victory. After the game, Luis Enrique, the capital club’s manager, spoke to PSG TV about his players’ performance.
Luis Enrique: “I really liked the intensity with which we started the match.”
“I liked almost everything. The pre-match atmosphere for a Champions League game at the Parc des Princes is always special. The fans were incredible, as always, but it feels different in this competition. And I really liked the intensity with which we started the match. When we play with that kind of intensity off the ball, we are a very difficult team to contain.
I am very happy with the result; it would have been exceptional to keep a clean sheet, but I can say I’m happy. I think everyone—especially the fans—believes in what we are doing. It’s normal to face difficult moments during a season, but we showed everyone that we are here, that this is our competition. And we want that to continue.”
It was the capital club’s first European match of the season and a spectacular opening victory. While they have faced some struggles getting going in the league, PSG demonstrated that the Champions League remains their competition. As two-time winners and defending champions, the Parisians needed to get off to a strong start—especially at the Parc des Princes in front of a raucous crowd.
Even though there are still plenty of things to iron out in this team, which is currently rebuilding, Wednesday’s performance was massive. Utterly dominant, the Parisians gave their opponents no chance. The expected outcome played out, allowing the capital club to launch their European campaign perfectly ahead of their trip to England on October 14 to face Manchester City.
