Walid Regragui, the Moroccan national team coach, was asked at a press conference to comment on Achraf Hakimi’s potential participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off on December 21. He expressed great optimism regarding the 27-year-old Paris Saint-Germain right-back, while remaining vague about his return date following his ankle injury in early November.
“Achraf will play in the AFCON, that’s for sure. We are very positive about Achraf’s participation. Which match and when? In any case, he will play in the AFCON with us, that’s certain. We have some clarity, but we’ll keep it to ourselves.”
It’s very clear that Hakimi will be ready to play during the AFCON. However, it’s not yet a question of announcing his fitness for the opening match against Comoros this Sunday, December 21. There’s undoubtedly a desire from both the player and the coach, but a certain amount of caution is also necessary to avoid taking too many risks going forward.
It’s difficult to be certain at the moment. At least the Parisian full-back resumed team training yesterday. That’s very encouraging for the rest of the competition. And it gives us a glimmer of hope for the first match.
