Paris Saint-Germain drew 2–2 against Rennes this Sunday at Roazhon Park in the opening round of the 2026–2027 Ligue 1 season. After the match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique spoke at a press conference.
Luis Enrique: “It’s important to see that so many players are ready.”
Are you surprised that Ferran Torres (who came on after the break against Rennes and scored two goals) is ready so soon?
He didn’t do badly, did he? He scored two goals from magnificent passes by Fabián Ruiz, but I’m happy with everyone who came on in a very difficult match, because in the first half we struggled to contain Rennes. They were good on the counter-attack and scored two wonderful goals. It was tough. But for me, it’s important to see that so many players are ready.
Is this an ideal start?
Yes, but what they do in one or a few matches isn’t the most important thing. We sign players to go on a long journey with them. It’s very positive for him, and we’re very happy.
Luis Enrique: “We had a very good transfer window.”
Is competition for places even fiercer at PSG this season?
Clearly. What we’re always looking for is the best players for each match. It’s harder than last year—that’s our ambition. I think we had a very good transfer window, and we’re still open to various possibilities. Generally speaking, everyone knows the difficulties a team faces in continuing to win. And it’s clear that we need to keep improving.
PSG struggled to show a cutting edge, a bit like against Lens…
No, not at all. It’s different. The match against Lens was very good. Not today. There was a big difference in pace. In Ligue 1, you have to be more prepared, more alert. It’s the opening matchday; we still need to improve. Today was a very clear test.
Luis Enrique: “We have meetings with the referees where they tell us they’re going to do certain things, and then it turns out like this.”
You were caught out twice on transitions, just like at Lens. Is that an area for improvement?
That was one of our strengths over the last three seasons. We were very focused on that. It depends on the players’ physical condition. We always want mobility, but we have to be mindful of player positioning. If you lose focus for a moment, you can run into trouble. The Rennes attackers were dangerous, and that was difficult to contain.
You seemed annoyed on the touchline at times. Why was that?
Because the result was disastrous. Because we have meetings with the referees where they tell us they’re going to do certain things, and then it turns out like this. There were various situations that frustrated me.
