Paris Saint-Germain beat Lens on penalties (1-1 in normal time) this Sunday at Stade Bollaert in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France 2024-2025. After the match, Paris goalkeeper Matvey Safonov (25) spoke in the mixed zone. In particular, the Russian talked about his difficult adaptation to PSG.
Safonov “Now I’m ready to play, to be in this team.”
“It’s very interesting for me, it’s a new level and of course I needed time to adapt. I understand the coach’s demands better now, and everything is easier for me.
When I first arrived, the first training sessions were terrible because they went so fast. I needed time to raise my level and now I’m ready to play, to be in this team”, comments relayed by Le Parisien.
The Russian keeper continues to surprise with his humility and frankness. We’ve often seen players talk about an adaptation period, which is logical when you change clubs. But it’s more a question of automatisms in general, of getting to know the staff, the players, even the city and the country.
Safonov is quite clear: he was a bit overwhelmed at first by the level of play. It was a new level and it had to be reached. The club didn’t recruit him at random; they believe in his abilities. He also seems to be fairly confident in general, and is fighting for his place.
There’s still a long way to go, and yesterday’s penalty shoot-out means we can’t suddenly say he’s a sure bet for PSG’s ambitions. But these are points scored and a nice confidence boost. We certainly wish him every success in maintaining this momentum.
