Marquinhos, the 31-year-old central defender and captain of Paris Saint-Germain, stopped in the mixed zone after the 2-1 defeat against Sporting Lisbon this Tuesday at the Estádio José Alvalade in Matchday 7 of the 2025-2026 Champions League.

Marquinhos: “If we’re not efficient in attack and defense…”

How do you explain the defeat?

If we’re not efficient in attack and defense, I think the result can end up like this. These are things we managed to improve at this stage of the competition last year. It’s up to us now to work on improving what we need to improve. But there were some good things in a match like this. We did some good things, but it’s true that we always have to question ourselves after a defeat like this.

How do you find the solution to win?

We’re competitors, we always want to win, we always want to improve. That’s how we improve, by talking in the locker room, in training, we have to communicate. We see what the coach says we need to improve.

Marquinhos: “We need to improve these details, and everything will be fine after that.”

Are you worried?

We shouldn’t throw everything away. The competitions are still there. In the Champions League, we’re fighting for a top-eight finish. In the Coupe de France, we lost, we’re out. But in the league, we’re still there, fighting for first place. We just need to improve a few things, we need to improve these details, and everything will be fine after that.

Marquinhos: “We can do great things.”

Is a top-eight finish in jeopardy?

We wanted to win today for that reason, to better secure our place in the top eight. We’ll see how it goes. We’re going to play this last match as a very important one for us, at home, with our fans, our energy, our home ground.

I think we can achieve great things, and we’ll see if we don’t manage to qualify for the round of 16. Then it’s up to us to play in the playoffs and fight for our place.
