Here is our series: 5 great reasons to tune in to the match. We’ll be highlighting the most compelling aspects before every game, mixing a bit of seriousness with humor. Mind you, this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive preview. We continue here with Paris Saint-Germain’s friendly match this Saturday against Manchester United at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg (kick-off at 5 PM; CET).
5 – A Manchester United side that has regained its footing.
After years that were very difficult—even worrying—Manchester United has seen manager Michael Carrick (a former midfielder) restore some coherence and enthusiasm to their play. Results have improved too, with an impressive third-place finish in the Premier League last season—something that seemed unthinkable when he took over from Ruben Amorim in January. It’s a chance to take stock of this giant as it regains its strength, even if it is just a friendly.
4 – Koukaba—again?
Axel Koukaba, a 16-year-old defender, was one of the few real bright spots in PSG’s friendly against Mallorca on Wednesday (a 3-0 loss). We’re keen to see him in action again during this second pre-season match. The youngster showed real character despite his age, though it remains to be seen how much playing time he’ll get.
3 – A goalkeeper ready to make his mark?
Matvey Safonov (27) and Lucas Chevalier (24) both spent time in goal on Wednesday without making a significant impact. While nothing to be alarmed about in a friendly, it does fuel speculation about competition for the spot—and even the potential arrival of Zion Suzuki (23, Parma and Japan). Perhaps at least one of the two will put in a more inspired performance this Saturday.
2 – Plenty of returning players.
No one will be at 100% fitness, but there is hope that PSG will regain some key strength this Saturday. Whether starting or coming off the bench, the players who returned last Monday—Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves, and Marquinhos—should be able to play this time around. That represents a significant boost, which is also important for the challenges ahead.
1 – Gaining momentum with competitive action on the horizon.
This is already PSG’s final friendly match; the focus must shift to competitive fixtures starting Wednesday, with the European Super Cup against Aston Villa on August 12. Next comes the Trophée des Champions in Lens on the 16th, followed by the Ligue 1 opener against Rennes on the 23rd.
The team needs to build up its strength quickly, even though the ultimate goal for a trophy-winning season is to go the distance. Nevertheless, there are already trophies up for grabs, and the Parisians are expected to prepare as effectively as possible—potentially fielding a lineup capable of playing at least 45 minutes against Aston Villa.
